Building Block This program, just for teens ages 13-17, combines great activities and valuable lessons to help you give back to your community, fulfill your school’s service learning hours requirement, and gain job skills that can help you be successful at work. The new spring 2010 Building Block training sessions begin in March and all of them are held at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Center in Landover. You can choose to register for as many of the blocks as you like, and if you attend all four, you will receive an awesome gift at the completion of your trainings. Service learning hours will be awarded for each completed training session. The four Building Block sessions include:BUILDING BLOCK #1:My Space: The Real ThingFocus: The Meaning of Service to the Community What is service learning? What is volunteering? What’s the difference between the two terms? Block #1 focuses on the true meaning of service and why it is so important to get involved in your community, help others, and support a cleaner environment. Explore exciting, fun ways to connect with your community and make a real difference! Wednesday, March 3, 7-9 pm OR Wednesday, April 7, 7-9 pm BUILDING BLOCK #2:Take it PersonalFocus: Developing Personal Skills Where do you see yourself in 10 years? 20 years? Tomorrow? Block #2 introduces useful techniques that can help you set realistic goals, use your time wisely, and commit to your volunteer position and future job placements. Take this session personally! Wednesday, March 10, 7-9 pm OR Wednesday, April 21, 7-9 pm BUILDING BLOCK #3:The Leadership AcademyFocus: Developing Interpersonal Relationships and How it Affects Team Work and Team Building Ever think, “Why am I so different? Why can’t I get along with my friends and parents? They just don’t see things my way. I like who I am and still want to fit in, but how?” Block #3 will help you define who you are and how to build better relationships with adults and peers. You’ll identify ways to work through conflict and find peaceful resolutions. Learn about your own leadership traits and about social acceptance. Identify ways to adjust/recover from disappointment or change. Wednesday, March 17, 7-9 pm OR Wednesday, April 28, 7-9 pm BUILDING BLOCK #4:Getting Ready!Focus: Developing a Proper Work Ethic How do you prepare for the workplace and be your best? Block #4 will explore why it is important to work hard and develop a strong loyalty to your employer. Learn to complete a desirable application. Recognize strong interview techniques and identify the best way to dress for the job. Deliver these new skills with a smile as you discover the importance of excellent customer service. Recognize the traits of being an outstanding employee. Get ready because YOU will head into the workplace, prepared and ready to be a great employee.
