Safety Training and Certification

The Department of Parks and Recreation offers Aquatic Certification and Training courses including:

Lifeguard Prep Swim Lessons (Ages 15 yrs. & up) – Interested in taking the Lifeguarding Training course, but need more practice? Sign up for Lifeguard Prep Swim Lessons! This course will prepare participants to complete the Lifeguard Pre-Test and will focus on stroke improvement and endurance. Participants must be comfortable in deep water.

Lifeguard Training (Ages 15 yrs. & up)
Begins Oct 1st; meets Fridays and Sundays from 6-9:30 pm
Location: Rollingcrest-Chillum Splash Pool

Become an American Red Cross Lifeguard! This course includes CPR/AED for Lifeguards and First Aid. Prior to taking this course, participants must pass a pre-test consisting of a 300-yard swim (100 yards of front crawl, 100 yards of breaststroke, and 100 yards of front crawl or breaststroke) and also swim 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, and return it to the starting point in 1 minute, 40 seconds.


Lifeguard Instructor Training (Ages 17 yrs. & up)
Begins Sept 28th; meets Tuesdays from 6-9:30 pm
Location: Fairland Aquatic Center

Become an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor! This course will train students to become Lifeguarding and CPR/AED for Lifeguards instructors.  Participants must be currently certified (or within the last year) in basic-level Lifeguarding & First Aid and CPR/AED for Lifeguards.

Water Safety Instructor Training (Ages 16 yrs. & up)
Begins Sept 16th; meets Thursdays from 5-8:30 pm
Location: Rollingcrest-Chillum Splash Pool

Become an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor! This course will train participants to become certified swim lesson instructors.  Participants must be able to tread water and demonstrate Youth 4 / Adult 4 level proficiency in the front crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, back crawl, and sidestroke.

Certified Pool Operator® Training (Ages 16 yrs. & up) -
Location: Allentown Fitness & Splash Park

Prince George’s County residents can now take Certified Pool Operator® (CPO®) training through the M-NCPPC Department of Parks and Recreation starting this spring. This comprehensive two-day course is designed to provide individuals with the basic knowledge, techniques, and skills of pool and spa operations, and allows individuals who pass to obtain a pool operator’s certificate at health departments across the country, including the Prince George’s County Health Department.
The Certified Pool/Spa Operator® certification program has delivered more training than any other program in the pool and spa industry since 1972, resulting in more than 200,000 successful CPO® certifications in 44 countries.

Prince George’s PRIDE Swim Team

Following the success of our summer swim season, the Prince George’s PRIDE swim team is beginning a year-round program for the first time!
 
PRIDE plans to compete in meets beginning in January 2011 and will require any swimmers interested in competition to register with Potomac Valley Swimming (PVS) at the start of Session II (December 1- February 28). PVS is a Local Swimming Committee (LSC) under USA Swimming, the National Governing Body for competitive swimming in the United States. PVS houses over 8000 swimmers from the District of Columbia, Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland, and the counties of Fairfax and Arlington and the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church in Virginia. By joining PVS, you will automatically be registered with USA Swimming and eligible to participate in a wide variety of local, state, and national competitions. Practice Information
•    PRIDE will be training at the Robert I. Bickford Natatorium at Prince George’s Community College between September 2010 and May 2011. 
•    The team will practice Tuesdays and Fridays from 6-7 pm and Sundays from 1-3 pm.
